Chapter 65

Chapter 65—Allison explains, Bob listens
12:22 p.m., Friday, December 30

Allison’s face flushed with anger. “You a**hole. You know what that was all about,” She said. “That business between James and me. Don’t even pretend you don’t know the story behind it.”
“I’m not sure what the real story is, why don’t you tell me.” Bob said.
“The phony affair, the press conference, it was all part of James’ insane idea to draw attention away from what could be a much larger problem.”
“Really?” Bob chuckled. He always got a kick out of Allison’s foul mouth. “Just what is it that this a**hole husband of yours is supposed to know about?”
“I’ve got a problem—actually we’ve got a problem.”
“What sort of problem do we have?” Bob asked.
“There have been a series of meetings—four meetings, perhaps five, if you count the one with Jerry. They were supposed to be secret meetings. But somehow they were recorded. If this comes out, it could be very embarrassing.”
“Meetings? You didn’t ever mention any secret meetings. What was the purpose of these secret meetings, and who took part?”
“A month ago Jerry came to me with an idea. …”
“Jerry! That sissy sonofabi**h. I didn’t think he ever had any real ideas.
“Well, as it turns out, he’s the source of the problem. No way to know for absolute certain, but according to James, it looks like Jerry might be the one who leaked most of the recordings.”
“That doesn’t sound like something he’d do. He’s not the smartest person in the world, but he knows better than to cross us.”
“We don’t think he meant to. We think that someone, James thinks Mossad, planted an eavesdropping device on him without his knowledge.”
“What the hell does that mean?” Bob asked. “How does something like that happen?”
“He’s developed a hearing problem, and he had an implant. We think that a bug was implanted in his head along with the Cochlear implant.”
Bob started laughing, “Jerry—a damn bionic man? I don’t believe this. What the hell did you get us into? And I mean us. You go down, I go down. … What were these secret meetings all about?”
“Well, when Jerry originally came to me with his idea, …”
“Hold on just a second,” Bob interrupted. “Explain what you just said a minute ago. That Jerry might have been the source of some of the recordings. Was there another source?”
